I deliver presentations about my personal experience writing poetry, adaptable to audiences of middle and high school students as well as older adults and seniors. With a background in the military and in accounting, no one is more surprised than me to have found success and fulfillment in creative writing in retirement. My story includes landing in a writing class at Turning Point in Kansas City in 2020, giving me an avenue to express myself through poetry and to find my way through medical depression and the isolation of the pandemic.

Through reading original poems and telling the stories of their origins, I like to make poetry accessible to everyone, regardless of background or age. I came to poetry as an older person and as a beginner, and my learning experience can help all ages to see how they can find a creative outlet even if they have not written before. Writing poems can help one’s attitude, energy, and resilience, as well as providing profound enjoyment and satisfaction.

Here is a recent endorsement from a 7th grade English Language Arts teacher: “Mr. Swainston captivated my students, and that is not an easy task with seventh graders.” If you have an audience that might connect with a poetry presentation, let’s talk.
